any one of a group of hormonelike substances produced in the tissues of mammals by the action of enzymes on certain fatty acids, found in high concentrations in seminal fluid of the prostate gland, and thought to have a variety of important functions in reproduction, nerve-impulse transmission, muscle contraction, regulation of blood pressure, and metabolism. Abbr: PG (no periods).
